Chapter 1

As the year wrapped up, Heidi had spent the holidays with Donna's family. To her surprise, Heidi's folks hadn't really kicked up a fuss about her skipping the family get-togethers at the time. A small part of her was a little upset by that. But the warmth and kindness that Donna's family accepted her with went a long way to take her mind off it. Donna's brother, Donald, had made a joke about her young age compared to Donna's but she had turned the tables on him. His wife was fifteen years older than him after all and as the holidays went on, Donald and Heidi had fun pranking each other. A rubber band around a sink sprayer–gluing down a drinking glass to a placemat. They were small things which distracted Heidi and let her have fun exercising her competitive spirit.

To make things even more interesting, no one at those family dinners batted an eyelash when Heidi called Donna "ma'am", or slipped up and called her Mommy on morning over coffee. They went on with their business and Donna folded Heidi closer, giving her a good squeeze.

During the months since Heidi had spoken to her parents, they'd tried to call a half dozen times. But it wasn't until after the holidays they really noticed Heidi was not around to be picked on. They had even had extended family reach out to her on their behalf. But she had no time for their shenanigans. Each time they brought her parents up, Heidi shut down the conversation. Eventually, though, Donna had been right. The issue had forced itself.

It had happened while she was grocery shopping. It was a weekday, Donna was at work. Donna had given her a list of items to pick up from the store for a special dinner. She and her Mommy were celebrating their six-month anniversary and Heidi was in so buoyant a mood she didn't even notice she was being followed.

Heidi walked in pigtails down the butcher lane and eyed a rack of ribs that cried out for basting and barbecuing.

"Heidi."

Uh-oh. She knew that voice. It had been largely absent when she was a child except for when she was about to endure the harshest of punishments. Her head turned, and she spotted her father pushing an empty cart. Her brother nervously stood behind him as if he wasn't part of the confrontation at all. Heidi tried to make eye contact with Walter but he shook his head and gestured his chin back at their father.

"Dad. Hello," Heidi said. She looked him dead on and relaxed her shoulders but her knuckles tightening around the handle of her grocery cart.

"We missed you at the holidays. Your mother is worried," her father said.

"Tell her not to be. I'm fine," Heidi responded. Her blue eyes narrowed as she looked from him back to her brother. He was still keeping the distance and had somehow drifted even further down the aisle.

"You didn't show up for Christmas," her father said as if this required any explanation.
